Protecting Dartmoor – The Moor Otters Project
We have been delighted to support the fantastic Moor Otters Project at The White Hart Hotel. The project included The Moor Otters Trail – a public arts trail launched in June 2017 that saw 101 otter sculptures in various locations across Dartmoor and surrounding towns. Otter spotting was the thing to do around Dartmoor. Two of these can still be seen chilling at The White Hart Hotel. ‘Bass Otter’ and ‘Sherlock Otter’ take pride of place in our restaurant and lounge!
The trail was designed to encourage people to discover new places and visit local businesses. The public arts initiative aimed to raise funds to support projects to conserve and enhance Dartmoor’s wildlife and landscape, improve accessibility to the moor and develop Dartmoor’s Junior Ranger programme. We are delighted to say it has proved to be a great success, with the funds raised now going towards three great projects including the employment of a Junior Ranger. The money will also help tackle the spread of non-native invasive plants and the repair of erosion affected areas. All great initiatives to help protect the natural beauty of Dartmoor for all of us.
So next time you are passing The White Hart, pop in and say hello to our two otter friends – Bass Otter and Sherlock Otter!
