You may be surprised to learn just how much there is for the whole family to do on Dartmoor. The White Hart Hotel is based at the gateway to the Moor offering some of the most fun and safe, family-friendly walking and cycling routes in the country.
Dartmoor is also a stone’s throw from some of the amazing attractions the county of Devon has to offer. There are theme parks, animal parks, National Trust properties and wonderful towns and villages to visit. All this and, of course, miles and miles of beaches and coastlines to explore. The whole family is guaranteed to want to switch off their screens and get out and play. You won’t be able to fit it all it!
So, get the whole family out and about this half term and leave those screens behind. Here are just a few ideas of the amazing things you can get up to:
Have Fun at a Theme Park
Woodlands Family Theme Park is holding a Half Term ‘Calling all Super Heroes and Princesses!’ holiday event. Also very popular with families is Crealy Theme Park or The Milky Way.
Walk on the Moor
As well as the miles and miles of trails on Dartmoor, the newly opened Wray Valley Trail is perfect for families. The Trail is a seven mile mainly traffic-free route from Moretonhampstead to Bovey Tracey, following the dismantled railway line through the National Trust Parke Estate and the picturesque village of Lustleigh.
Learn Something New
Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery has a special family Chinese New Year Trail.
Meet Some Animals
Devon and Dartmoor are home to lots of wonderful animals. Some of our favourite places to visit are: Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts, National Marine Aquarium, Dartmoor Zoo, The Donkey Sanctuary or Pennywell Farm.
Get Cycling on Dartmoor
With miles of dedicated off-road cycling routes like the Wray Valley Trail or the Granite & Gears Princetown Railway route the whole family can get involved and take to their bikes.
Visit a National Trust Property
Dartmoor and the surrounding area is home to an abundant array of amazing National Trust properties like Buckland Abbey, Saltram, Killerton and the very popular, newly refurbished Castle Drogo.
Take a Train Ride
For those railway fans in the family there are a number of popular lines to explore including Dartmouth Steam Railway, South Devon Railway or the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
Explore Waterfalls & Gorges
Dartmoor is not only famous for its moorland, it is also renowned for its dramatic rivers that carve their way through the valleys creating world famous waterfalls like Becky Falls, Canonteign Waterfalls and Country Park and Lydford Gorge.
Go Horse Riding on Dartmoor
The Moors offer the most incredible scenery to ride through. There are a number of stables offering treks for the whole family, like Shilstone Rocks Riding Centre.
Go Underground
It does occasionally rain in Devon! But not to worry there’s fun to be had, even underground. Kents Cavern has plenty of family activities happening over half term where you can explore the ancient caves.
