The White Hart is the perfect base from which to explore Dartmoor and the whole of Devon. If you’re looking for things to do on Dartmoor, this is a great place to start! Set in the centre of the county, you have Dartmoor on your doorstep and stunning coastlines to the north and south – both dramatically different in their natural beauty and attractions.
If walking is your passion, you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you prefer a sporting break, you’ll find lots on offer including shooting, fishing and golf. Moretonhampstead has an established community of artists with courses on everything from making shoes, to crafting a felt tea cosy and creative cake baking. The local arts centre at Greenhill is a two–minute stroll away and well worth a visit to find fantastic locally crafted items and interesting exhibitions. The town even has its own vintage car collection at the Moretonhampstead Motor Museum.
Apart from the charm of its narrow country lanes festooned with flowers in springtime, the area boasts stunning natural beauty plus some delightful towns and village that are perfect to explore. From nearby Chagford to the market town of Tavistock – a glorious 25-minute drive away across the moor – to the cathedral city of Exeter, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to shop or merely browse.
There are also some wonderful National Trust properties nearby, as well as glorious gardens to visit. The north Devon coast is rugged and dramatic, while the south coast has a softer, gentler character to it. Coastal towns well worth a visit include Dartmouth and Salcombe in the south and Ilfracombe in the north.
