West Country Fly Fishing, River Dart

White Hart Hotel guests can fish on the Duchy of Cornwall fishing on the river Dart. There are miles of true wild brown trout fishing to explore on Dartmoor that will take you to some of the most beautiful spots in Britain.

The Duchy of Cornwall Fishing
The Duchy of Cornwall fishing covers some 10 miles of the East and West Dart and their tributaries from high on the moor to their confluence at Dartsmeet. A 15 minute drive from the hotel will take you to Postbridge, Two Bridges or Dartsmeet, all good places to start from. We’ll make you a packed lunch to keep you going and our map will help you find some of our favourite spots - and a nice pub or two to call in on your way back at the end of the day.

River Trout Fishing
This is moorland wild brown trout fishing at its best and even when the larger rivers are coloured and in spate, the Dartmoor streams will quickly become fishable, providing excellent sport. The river trout are generally opportunistic and rise freely, but they are naturally wary and you need to be stealthy, particularly to connect with the larger fish.

A light rod and delicate approach is needed. Short casts with an upstream dry or nymph or a downstream wet fly. The pattern is less important than presentation and if they are interested, the takes will be lightening fast and you'll need quick reactions to set the hook!

Thigh waders and a waterproof jacket are a must – not least as up on the moor you can get all four seasons’ weather in a day!

Local expert and Chairman of the Upper Teign Fishing Association, Mike Weaver describes it very well in this article. Dartmoor fishing article
