About us
Few hotels on Dartmoor have a history like ours. We've provided warmth and shelter for weary Dartmoor travellers for 250 years – and we've heard more than our fair share of stories along the way. It all starts back in 1775…
Since 1775, the White Hart has been a beacon of comfort for weary travellers en route across Dartmoor from Exeter to Princetown. Now sympathetically refurbished, this Grade II-listed former posting inn stands as one of the most charming and authentic Dartmoor hotels.
Visit today and you can expect the same friendly, attentive service that guests have enjoyed for 250 years. A warm bed, a hearty home-cooked meal and that special attention to detail that only a family-run hotel can give you.
The hotel is in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park in the centre of the old market town of Moretonhampstean, recently voted the best small town to live in Devon. Walkers, weekend-breakers, those touring Dartmoor or just relaxing and business people using the White Hart as a base - all are welcome, as are their four-legged friends. The hotel's central Devon position also means it is perfect for visiting both the north and south Devon coasts in a day and still be back in time for dinner.
On 14th September 2025 the White Hart Hotel had been trading for exactly 250 years to the day. Its first licence to sell alcohol was recently discovered by its owner, Allen Jackson, amongst very old documents at Exeter's Heritage Centre. It revealed it was granted to a Nicholas Alway for the White Hart Inn, as it was called then, on 14th September 1775.
These aren't just rooms – they're memories in the making. Each of our 28 ensuite bedrooms reflects the historic character of our Grade II-listed Dartmoor inn. Expect unique period features, tastefully updated with bespoke décor, cosy beds and luxury facilities.
In the 18th century, hungry travellers would call into the White Hart, one of a handful of trusted pubs on Dartmoor at the time, for a warm meal and a welcome pint of cider. Today, the tradition continues – but with modern flavours, intimate décor and a renewed focus on high-quality local produce. (Cider's still on the menu, of course.)
Bring along your dog to White Hart Hotel, whether you are coming in for a meal, or to stay the night!
